Biology
The biologic principle of orthodontics is very simple:
if a constant force of 30 to 100 grams is applied to
a tooth, it will move at a rate of 1 millimetre per
month. Orthodontic appliances (braces) are mechanical
devices that deliver the right forces in the right directions
over a period of time.
In
the growing child, orthodontists also aim to harness
and modify growth to improve the bite and facial appearance.
Orthodontic
Treatment
This varies enormously and can only be determined by
consultation. For most patients, treatment with appliances
takes between 12 and 24 months during which visits are
necessary every five to eight weeks. After this, the
teeth usually need to be held in their new positions
with simplified appliances known as retainers.
The
Reigate Specialist Orthodontic Practice is a private
practice. No NHS treatment is undertaken. Costs can
be discussed during the consultation and are always
confirmed in writing before treatment begins. A choice
of options is available for the staging of payments.
