| Consultations
are by appointment and can be arranged directly
by phone or following referral by a dentist.
The
parents of young patients are very welcome to
come into the surgery during consultations or,
indeed, during any treatment visit. In fact, this
applies to any patient who needs the moral support
or help of a friend or relative.
The
thirty minute initial consultation consists of
taking a history (listening to the patient's concerns)
and a clinical examination of the face, mouth
and teeth. This is often (but not always) sufficient
to determine suitability for treatment and the
broad nature of options for treatment.
The
full consultation process necessitates x-rays
and impressions for plaster models with a second
visit to discuss matters in detail. The follow
up visit is usually when decisions are made. The
problems and possible solutions are presented
and any concerns discussed. This is important
as any consent given for treatment is only valid
if it is based on being properly informed.
Subsequently,
a clinical report is sent to the general dentist
for information and, if treatment is to be undertaken,
we write to the patient (or parent as appropriate)
to confirm the clinical condition and treatment.
Costs are always confirmed in writing before treatment
begins.
